President's Message
Dear Friends,
What is the James Jr. Fund? Some of you may not know anything about us or how we
got started. While living in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, our son James was diagnosed
with leukemia and was treated at the University of Michigan Medical Center for
two years. After moving to Florida he was treated through the Deed Club at
Jackson Memorial Hospital. James succumbed to leukemia in 1982. Being thankful
for help and support we received during this time, Mary Ann and I wanted to give
back to the community. First, we founded the Broward Chapter of the Children’s
Cancer Caring Center. Then we ultimately became The James Jr. Fund four years
ago.
We must thank the many people who helped us along the pathway to form a
fundraising venture that has raised over 5 million dollars to help sick
children. Some of the special people that have helped us over the years are:
A.D. Griffin; the late Mayor of Pembroke Pines, Charles W. Flanagan; and Bob
Amchir and the Wings of Gold Toy Run. There are countless volunteers that assist
us year round by serving on our board, planning special events, and collecting
items for our many auctions.
The James Jr. Fund raises money to support the local children of Broward County.
In the beginning, the funds raised were used to support Joe Di Maggio Children's
Hospital. Two years ago Mary Ann and I, along with our Board of Directors,
decided to reach out to other local area hospitals, and added the Chris Evert
Children’s Hospital to our list of recipients. We also assist Schott Communities
and the work they do for the deaf and disabled.
Our future vision is to raise $200,000 annually. Our fundraising activities
consist of our Annual Grand Ball, our 600-club raffle, and the Annual Toy Run.
We also raise funds via our membership dues. You and your friends can become a
member of The James Jr. Fund for only $5.00 a year. Donations are also accepted
at any time such as in memory of a loved one, someone’s birthday, anniversary or
any other event. We also raise money through advertisements purchased for our
program journal distributed at the Grand Ball. Anyone can purchase an
advertisement, not just businesses. You and your friends may want to purchase
space in the program. We have everything from a tribute page to full-page ads.
Mary Ann and I want to express our sincere thanks for your dedication and
support to the James Jr. Fund. Good Health and Happiness to each of you.
